Minister Verner - July 2007

Québec, Canada’s first city and a UNESCO world heritage site, will be the stage for major festivities in 2008 marking the 400th anniversary of its founding. There are few cities in North America that can celebrate such a storied past. The creation of the city of Québec in 1608 is a historic date for Canada and for North America. This will be an opportunity to celebrate the establishment of French civilization in North America and to understand the origins of the French language and culture in Canada. As well, this city witnessed first-hand the adventure that has built a dynamic and modern Canada, drawing strength from its linguistic duality and its cultural diversity. The festivities will highlight our rich history and give us an opportunity to express our pride.
In 2008, the inhabitants of our city and of the entire world will take part in the celebrations that will highlight this important chapter in our history. We will definitely welcome them with the warmth, enthusiasm, and generosity for which we are known.
As the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women and Minister for La Francophonie, I am proud that the Government of Canada is recognizing the importance of these celebrations by engaging in some significant projects. I can assure you that, over the coming months, I will continue to offer unwavering support for the organization of the 400th anniversary of the city’s founding. I invite residents of Québec city and all Canadians to take part in this important event so that, together, we can mark a historic occasion—the anniversary of a unique city that unites history and innovation.

Josée Verner
