Minister Blackburn - July 2007

Jean-Pierre Blackburn

A significant amount of the funding provided by Canada’s New Government celebrations of the 400th anniversary of Québec City in 2008 will be used for three redevelopment projects on Port of Québec property: Pointe-à-Carcy, Beauport Bay, and Brown Basin. These three extraordinary windows on the St. Lawrence River will become major recreational, historic, and tourist attractions. They will create a link between the river and the shore, “where people and river meet.”

As with the Plains of Abraham for the 300th anniversary of the city, this redevelopment will become the Government of Canada’s permanent legacy to commemorate 400 years of Québec’s history. It will allow the population to enjoy the full benefit of the site’s riverside location and will give the people of the Québec City and all Canadians access to a lively site in a setting that incorporates both the area’s maritime life and its rich heritage. The new facilities will have a lasting impact on the quality of life of future generations.

As Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, I am proud that the Agency which I head is associated with the development of three outstanding sites that will attract and charm local residents and visitors from around the world who come to celebrate this important event in the history of Quebec and Canada.
