Canadian Museum of Civilization
Two major exhibits for one major anniversary
The 400th anniversary of the founding of Québec City marks both the foundation of the Canadian state and reminds us that the French language is the founding language of Canada. The Canadian Museum of Civilization is celebrating this anniversary with two special exhibits.
The quest for a New World
Four hundred years ago, the English, French and Spanish empires shared one goal: to conquer the New World. Their quest to tame the new land and create new societies, changed the lives of both, the settlers and the indigenous peoples of those territories and, in fact, the face of the world.
The exhibit Jamestown, Québec, Santa Fe: Three North American Beginnings will feature more than 130 artifacts’ from the three colonies. These pieces provide evidence of the ways the colonies have developed, focusing on trade, agriculture, society, religion and relationships with indigenous peoples like the Powhatan, Algonquin, Huron and Pueblo.
The Virginia Historical Society and the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History jointly organized the touring exhibit, with support from Robins Foundation, Land America, Jamestown 2007, and Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
Celebrate 400 years of Québec creativity
The exhibit Heart and Soul: Québec Folk Art will feature carvings, paintings and other creations which showcase the wonderful talents of folk artists. This is an invitation to discover a rich and surprising world.
There will be approximately 400 pieces on exhibit – some ancient and contemporary, others traditional– unconventional; witch will demonstrate the range of diversity in folk art through the ages. The exhibit will also highlight the liveliness of modern folk art by showcasing the work of some of the most intriguing artists of the day.
