Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions

A Gift for Future Generations

The Government of Canada is proud to be part of this major national historic event: the 400th birthday of Québec also represents the anniversary of the founding of Canada.

In a speech given in the City of Québec in May 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on this topic:

"Our government will do its part to ensure that this anniversary is celebrated with dignity and lives on in our memories."

The Government of Canada, through the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, mandated the Port of Québec to come up with its legacy to the people for Québec’s 400th anniversary. In consultation with City of Québec officials, the port authorities developed the Where People and River Meet project, an initiative to redevelop Baie de Beauport, Pointe-à-Carcy and Bassin Brown.

These three sites, each one a place for discovering and rediscovering the St. Lawrence River, will from now on be part of the history of the City of Québec and of our country, standing not only as a symbol of unity, but also as a lasting legacy from the federal government to a city that is the pride of all Canadians.

The Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec is responsible for managing the government funds allocated for this redevelopment project. The Agency’s mission is to promote the long-term economic development of the regions of Quebec by giving special attention to those where slow economic growth is prevalent or opportunities for productive employment inadequate. In carrying out this mission, the Agency seeks to foster co-operation and complementarity with Quebec and its communities.
